Mission StatementA program with more than 35 City Coordinators across the U.S. who have gathered data information on resources from their city and/or state on services offered by various agencies (food stamps, housing, health plan, schools etc.) and of special events (like job fairs, expos, etc.) that can be used by Puerto Ricans climate refugees arriving on the U.S. mainland.

GoalTo assist Puerto Ricans and other regional climate refugees who have been temporarily or permanently moved to the U.S. mainland with locating and securing vital resources for a successful transition to ensure good health, optimal productivity and cultural assimilation.

CITY COORDINATORS WANTED
It’s never an easy decision to leave your home and start a new life. For many Puerto Ricans (Boricuas), the decision to move to the mainland came soon after the Hurricane Maria devastated their island on September 2017. For some, the decision was made to leave even before the hurricane hit since the declining economy on the island had make finding good paying jobs and stable housing, education and healthcare very challenging. Even 18 months after Hurricane Maria, thousands of Boricuas are grappling with the difficult decision whether or not to “Empezando En Cero” in the mainland of the United States.
The team at Puerto Rico Rises is looking for your help to ensure a “soft landing” for the Puerto Ricans leaving the island. As diverse as the island is, the needs for those arriving to the mainland will also be diverse. Some will need little help – maybe just temporary housing assistance and directions on enrolling their children in school. Others may need more help such as navigating a new environment, financial assistance, food security or language services. Puerto Rico Rises is here to help.
Through the Puerto Rico Rises “Empezando En Cero” (Starting From Scratch) program, Puerto Ricans can find valuable resources in key US mainland cities that can help them through the transition.
Where do you fit in?
Each major city where Puerto Ricans are moving to will have a city coordinator who can assist the organization in maintaining the list of resources in their city. Additionally, city coordinators will be part of fundraisers, supply and food drives, and will be key team member in ensuring resource deployment to Puerto Rico should their be another natural disaster.
